Education in the Province of Canakkale is satisfactory. Schooling rate at the primary and secondary levels is very high. Literacy rate in the Province is 95% . Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University has 9 faculties, 13 two year vocational collages, and 2 institues.

Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University has expanded rapidly over the last few years and in the 2002-2003 academic year there were over 14,000 students participating in a wide variety of programmes taught by 650 academic staff in 2 graduate schools, 9 faculties, 2 polytechnic colleges (four year programmes) and 11 vocational colleges (two-year programmes). There are several campuses in Canakkale itself, and some of the academic units are located in other towns of the province.

In the twenty-first century, Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University aims to be a modern Republic University carrying out scientific research and providing regional, national and international dimensions to the training in all its educational programmes, while taking into account the resources of the area in which it is situated.

With the increase in globalisation in the new millenium, Canakkle Onsekiz Mart University is aware of the importance of encouraging, developing and supporting educational, cultural and scientific cooperation with overseas higher education institutions and others. The international outlook of the university is based on the concepts of developing a "knowledge society" and of "life-long learning".

COMU has therefore already made it its purpose to take steps on the path to international cooperation. In this connection, bilateral agreements of cooperation have been signed and contracts made with several universities from EU member and candidate states, as well as countries in other parts of the world. Our university collaborates in student and staff exchange programmes and other projects with higher education institutions from Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Holland, Japan, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain. Negotiations are currently underway with further institutions in both these and other countries.
